Several independent schools have either closed or announced closures, and some have cited the introduction of VAT on school fees as a contributing factor. While not all closures are directly attributed to VAT, it has been a factor for some, particularly in the wake of its introduction. Since Labour’s announcement in October 2023 that VAT would be applied to private school fees, AT LEAST 77 independent schools and independent specialist schools in England have closed.

Schools that have closed or announced closures and cited VAT as a factor (or at least a contributing factor).

Sadly, more independent schools have closed due to the implications of VAT being added. Not only is it tragic for the pupils whose education and lives are being disrupted but let’s not forget about the teachers, the groundstaff, the catering staff etc etc – the list sadly goes on!

Here are the latest closures as of 4th August 2025

Mount St Mary’s College and Barlborough Hall School

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the immediate closure of Mount St Mary’s College and Barlborough Hall School with effect from today, 30th July 2025. This decision has not been made lightly, and we understand the shock and distress this news will undoubtedly bring to our entire school community. Mount St Mary’s College and Barlborough Hall have been cornerstones of our community for nearly 200 years, providing a nurturing and faith-filled environment for generations of children. Since 2004, when the schools became an independent charitable trust governed by a dedicated board of trustees, we have sought to uphold the values of Jesuit education and provide an environment in which young people can grow, reflect, and flourish.”

Shaun Whyman – Chair of Governors

BROOKS SCHOOL

28th July 2025

“It is with deep regret that Brookes UK School announces its permanent closure, effective immediately. Despite the tireless efforts of the school’s leadership team, governors, and staff, the school has declared a state of insolvency and will now enter voluntary liquidation.

Brookes UK has been part of the independent school sector for many years, and this decision has not been taken lightly. The school has faced mounting financial pressures, including rising operational costs, reduced enrolment, unpaid fees, and the cumulative impact of wider economic challenges. After exploring every viable option to secure funding and support, the Board concluded that closure was the only responsible course of action”
